Human Rights Festival: 3-Day Fest

Constitution Hill's Human Rights Festival is an inaugural three-day festival designed to activate civil society and promote and advance human rights.

The festival is hosted by Constitution Hill in collaboration with the social justice and arts communities.

The Human Rights Festival commemorate is linked to our commemoration of Human Rights Day, which pays homage to all those who lost their lives in the fight for democracy, particularly during the Sharpeville Massacre of 21 March 1960, when police opened fire on a group of peaceful protestors against the apartheid pass laws. In total, 69 unarmed protestors were killed and at least 180 injured.

21 YEARS: LOOKING BACK TO LOOK FORWARD

The 10th December 2017 marked 21 years since the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa was signed into law. Since its establishment, the Constitutional Court has developed a jurisprudence that has impacted the lives of all South Africans. There are gains and lessons to be learnt thus far. Constitution Hill's ongoing 21st Anniversary programme will focus on how South Africans can shape the next 21 years of Constitutional democracy.

Why a Human Rights Festival?

Activism is also fast becoming a preoccupation of today’s youth, stoked by social media technology that keeps us connected, informed, and up-to-date every single minute of our waking lives.

It is an opportune time for organised social justice organisations to open dialogue with youth activists. The festival provides and opportunity not only to ignite but also to inform and guide this activism amongst our youth.

Why a Human Rights Festival?

Our constitutional democracy has faced many challenges. Recent challenges have inspired millions of South Africans into action. Movements like #Statecapture #FeesMustFall #Metoo have begun to awaken South Africans in defense of our democracy.

The Constitution and the rights enshrined therein can only be animated by active citizenry whose very agency is protected by the Constitution.

"The walk is a reminder to all citizens of the journey travelled to realise their freedom and democracy." SABC Digital News (24th March 2017)
