Activism Row is at the heart of the Constitution Hill Human Rights Festival. The various participating civil society and human rights organisations will have stands located in this space.
As South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day on 21 March 2019, access to justice remains an important theme for human rights organisations and all efforts are directed towards helping individuals and groups from poor communities.
Human rights organisations in South Africa are concerned with protecting civil rights to ensure the effective functioning of the country’s democracy. Many combine academic and applied research to lobby for social and economic justice.
Moreover, within the context of a developing country, a significant group is emerging that argues that poverty is the manifestation of unfulfilled rights. Thus, a significant proportion of South African organisations integrate human rights into broader development issues by advocating for a rights-based approach to development.
Organisations promoting a rights-based approach to development are commonly education and advocacy orientated, mobilising communities around various social justice campaigns. The Human Rights Festival aims to provide a face-to-face opportunity with communities to do just this, and provides an ideal opportunity for participants to connect directly with diverse communities.
Activism Row is curated to facilitate networking and collaboration opportunities for civil society organisations, allowing them to connect and engage with other grassroots and national organisations in the human rights arena.
Festivalgoers will be provided with engaging opportunities to explore critical issues and to collaborate in a nurturing space.
Activism Row showcases the work of the participating organisations in respect of social transformation, the values of fraternity and solidarity, as well as international struggles. The space will provide resources and opportunities to reflect, while empowering attendees to see themselves as agents of social change and so become more aware of opportunities to get involved and #StandUp4HumanRights.
Activism Row is open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 23 March and Sunday 24 March 2019.
