Artist Lisolomzi Pikoli has started painting his mural, Light Leads, at Constitution Hill.

A strong female form will stride across the wall of Constitution Hill’s Old Fort as soon as artist Lisolomzi Pikoli has finished painting his mural, Light Leads.

With the activities of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, in partnership with Nando’s, swirling around him on 23 June, Pikoli started painting the mural that aims to inspire visitors to trust their intuition.

“In this design we see a strong female figure walking through the darkness, naturally emanating her light. The idea behind the artwork is to trust your intuition and let the light from within you, lead in the darkest hour as so many of our past leaders have, so the piece serves as a beacon of hope,” he says.

Pikoli, also known as Mr Fuzzy Slipperz, works predominantly in the media of painting and drawing, but also as a public artist (murals, installations and performances).

His work aims to interpret the mechanics of the modern world and our inherited wisdoms through the human figure and its relationship to line, shape, form, movement and time.

He has shown work individually and in group shows in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Germany and Japan, and has also been hosted as an artist-in-residence by the Trinity Sessions and the Keleketla! Library in Johannesburg. Pikoli was selected as one of the top 100 young Independents 2017. He lives and works between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

This art project will have two phases: the first is five murals on the walls around the Old Fort, and the second will feature sculptures and installations. Calls for entry for the second phase will be announced at a later date.
