Johannesburg, South Africa — Contra.Joburg, Johannesburg's annual visual arts festival, will return to the inner city on 29 and 30 August 2026 under the theme "Different is Good."

Now entering its fifth edition, Contra.Joburg transforms Johannesburg's urban landscape into a city-wide celebration of contemporary art, creativity, ideas, and unexpected encounters. Across studios, galleries, creative spaces, vacant buildings, streets, and hidden corners of the city, visitors are invited to experience Johannesburg through a different lens. And every year, Contra.Joburg finds a way to inspire its audiences. This year 190 artists, designers, and makers will activate 12 spaces across the inner city, showcasing the length and the breadth of the creative talent in the CDB - and Constitution Hill's Creative Uprising is part of the party!

This year's theme, Different is Good, is both a celebration and a challenge.

At a time when algorithms reward sameness and certainty, Contra.Joburg champions experimentation, curiosity, individuality, and creative risk. The festival asks a simple question: What happens when we stop trying to fit in and start valuing what makes us different?

Johannesburg itself is a city built on difference — a place where cultures, histories, ambitions, contradictions, and possibilities collide. It is messy, creative, unpredictable, and constantly reinventing itself. Contra.Joburg embraces these qualities, creating opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with ideas that challenge assumptions and expand perspectives.

"This year's festival celebrates the artists, thinkers, makers and communities who are willing to imagine alternative possibilities for our city and ourselves."

Since its launch in 2022, Contra.Joburg has become one of South Africa's most distinctive visual arts events, connecting artists with new audiences while encouraging residents and visitors to explore Johannesburg's rich cultural landscape. The festival has showcased hundreds of artists and generated meaningful economic opportunities for creatives, galleries, studios, and cultural organisations across the city.

We continue to build on our partnership with Stephan Welz & Company (SWELCO), to provide new pathways — from the suburbs to the City, from the streets to art as a luxury. SWELCO will host a Contra.Joburg auction from 7 - 30 August. Some of the auction pieces will be exhibited at their office in Waverley which will also serve as a “park-and-ride” easy starting point for visitors. 

Civic advocate Jozi My Jozi, who recognise the power of creativity to energise Johannesburg’s future, is supporting this year’s Contra.Joburg, allowing the event to be both a celebration and a way of making space, building trust, and mapping new pathways between art and everyday life across the city. 

The festival is also an engine for the creative economy. Since its launch, Contra.Joburg has facilitated nearly R4.5million in direct art sales, enabling working artists to grow their practices and collectors — new and seasoned — to build meaningful collections. 

The full programme, participating venues, artist announcements, and special projects will be revealed in the coming months. For now, audiences are encouraged to save the date and prepare for a weekend of art, discovery, conversation, and unexpected moments.
