Art Aid Africa Artist-in-Residence Program- Creative Uprising Hub: @ConHill

Art Aid 9

Art-Aid Africa is proud to present the three-month residency program taking place at Studio 12, Transwerke Building, within the Creative Uprising Hub at Constitution Hill. At its heart, the program is about giving an artist the time, space and freedom to explore and develop their creative practice, without imposing a prescribed theme or artistic outcome. The intention is to create an environment where the artist can experiment, research, make, question, revisit ideas and potentially take their practice in new directions.

The artist has been selected following our experience of their creative journey through the Creative Uprising program. We have observed their growth, commitment and developing ideas and feel that this is an important stage at which to provide focused support and a dedicated period of creative development.

The three months will broadly move from exploration, through development, to resolution and presentation. The first month will allow the artist to experiment and open new possibilities; the second will focus on developing and refining emerging ideas into a body of work; and the final month will bring the work together and prepare it for public presentation.

Throughout the residency, Art Aid Africa will provide artistic and curatorial guidance, mentorship, studio engagement and professional development, as well as access to our networks within the creative industries. The artist will also be encouraged to engage with other artists and practitioners within the Creative Uprising Hub through creative conversations, exchanges and other activities.

An important part of the program will be documenting and developing the artist’s professional profile and narrative. Working with the artist, Art Aid Africa will develop content for social and digital platforms throughout the residency and liaise with Constitution Hill’s communications and social media teams to help share and amplify the artist’s journey.

The residency will culminate in a solo exhibition at the Gallery at Studio 12, with an exhibition opening followed by a three-week public run of the show. The artist will be involved in developing the exhibition concept, selecting and presenting the work, preparing their artist statement and engaging with audiences.

The residency is therefore intended to be more than simply providing studio space. It is a journey that supports the artist from creative exploration and experimentation through to professional presentation and public engagement.

Follow us on We are very excited about what this residency can offer the artist and about the opportunity to develop it within the Creative Uprising Hub.
