Chamber doors

Constitution Hill:

The doors to the Constitutional Court chamber were conceptualised by architect Mira Fassler Kamstra and artist Andrew Lindsay. The inspiration was taken from a gold and red Kente cloth, which has its roots in south Ghana.

Once their entry was successful, they asked artist and jewellery designer Verna Jooste to help with the creation of the over 3 000 individual pieces that make up the doors. Disposing of more technical methods, the team elected to measure the readiness of the copper for transferring images by watching the slowly heating metal until it became a deep orange.
