Born in England and raised across Lesotho, Nigeria, Sudan, and Mozambique, Maria took the South African creative industries by storm with her infectious passion for the arts. From her early days as a groundbreaking journalist and publicist to her work as a fashion designer, DJ, and cultural influencer, Maria didn't just work within the culture—she embodied it.

A true connector of people, heritage, and the arts, Maria became a driving force behind Constitution Hill from the moment she joined our journey. She was instrumental in the growth of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, brought vital light to the Human Rights Festival, and stood as our ultimate cultural champion. Beyond events, Maria was a pillar in advocating for Constitution Hill’s recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is so much to say about her monumental impact. Above all, it was her warmth, deep care, and genuine love for people that kept us grounded—reminding us always to connect, reflect, and share the spaces and stories that define who we are.

To honour her enduring contribution to our precinct, the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival unveiled a special tribute mural dedicated to Maria—celebrating a creative force who formed a deeply special bond with ConHill over many years. After years of shaping the festival’s publicity, Maria even took to the Basha stage herself to perform for the very first time in 2025.

Designed by acclaimed local artist Lazi Mathebula—widely recognized both nationally and globally for his distinct visual style—the mural now graces the Joubert Street public wall at Constitution Hill, standing proudly alongside icons like music legend Bra Hugh Masekela.

Her legacy lives on across our precinct, in our hearts, and throughout the creative culture she helped build.
