“I AM the mouthpiece to the Ancient world”
These powerful words come from Glorinah Khutso Mabaso, the Founder and Creative Director of the Pan-African brand Renaissance Design. A South African interior designer, Glorinah discovered her purpose in pattern and product design. Born in Jane Furse and spending her early childhood in Phokwane until the age of three, she grew up in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
While living in the city has enriched her creative perspective and provided diverse cultural experiences, Glorinah embraces her identity as “a city girl with a rural heart.” As an academic design thinker, she is passionate about reawakening ancient cultural knowledge across the African continent. By using pattern design as her visual language, she has taken on the challenge of becoming a mouthpiece for the ancient world.
Through the conceptualization and creation of patterns that evoke emotions and preserve heritage, Glorinah presents products that serve as modern African living archives.
Renaissance Design is a Pan-African multidisciplinary design company specializing in the conceptualization and creation of modern, ancient-inspired African patterns for various brands. Their services and collaborations span interior design, fashion, product design, and custom design services for corporate and hospitality brands.
Flame Studios at ConHill
Glorinah's work has historic significance, with her designs gracing the grand interiors of recently renovated spaces, including the Speak Truth to Power Lounge and Flame Studios at Constitution Hill.
“We believe in the preservation of African history through the creation of modern visual archives that document the continent’s heritage and the wealth found within its people—expressed through ancient tribal sounds, textures, patterns, dance, architecture, and natural surroundings.
Every pattern we design tells a story that embodies the essence of ancient Africa, visually translating its impact to evoke emotional and sometimes spiritual responses. Our signature style is rooted in neutral palettes, geometric patterns, careful colour use, and simple lines. This is our vision for the REBIRTH of Africa.”
