Reframe: Stories in Pursuit of Freedom from Gender-based Violence Exhibition

GIZ PFP Photo Exhibition Brochure FINAL PRINT UPDATED 1

In a region as diverse and dynamic as Southern Africa, stories have power. They shape how we see ourselves, each other and what is possible. This exhibition invites us to pause and to see differently. Each photograph captures more than a moment. It offers a window into the courage, creativity and collective spirit behind efforts to prevent gender-based violence. From village gatherings to regional dialogues, and in the portraits of those leading the charge, these images remind us that real change is not only possible - it is already happening. Over two phases, the Partnerships for Prevention of Gender- Based Violence in Southern Africa (PfP) programme has supported partners across Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and at regional level through SADC. Together with our partners, we are working to transform mindsets, strengthen institutions, and build a future where prevention is not just policy, but practice. At the heart of this work are people. Leaders, activists, artists, and everyday changemakers who are reclaiming space, reshaping narratives and reimagining a region free from violence. May these portraits inspire you, challenge you, and move you to join us in this shared mission.

Partnerships for Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in Southern Africa (PfP) is an initiative implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). PfP tackles the root causes of gender-based violence by challenging harmful social norms and fostering collaborative, multi stakeholder partnerships. With a strong focus on evidence and sustainability, PfP supports flagship projects, strengthens capacities, and promotes regional exchange and research to prevent violence against women and girls across Southern Africa.

"Over the past 18 months, I’ve had the opportunity to document the PfP programme and speak to activists, social workers, community leaders, and survivors across six countries, actively engaging to end gender-based violence in their communities. They shared their sorrows, passions, victories and resilience—and trusted me to carry their truths in these images that we present to you today. It has been both a privilege and a deeply personal journey to translate these stories into portraits that speak of both struggle and hope. I extend my heartfelt thanks to then PfP team for entrusting me with this project and for the creative freedom to tell these powerful stories through my lens".
