When visiting Constitution Hill, be sure to experience world-renowned visual activist and photographer Prof. Zanele Muholi’s powerful exhibition, Brave Beauties: Stories of Identity, Visibility & Courage, showing at the Women’s Jail until 24 September 2026.

Curated by acclaimed activist Yaya Mavundla—herself a participant in the series—Brave Beauties is an empowering ongoing photographic essay documenting and celebrating transgender women and gender-nonconforming individuals in South Africa since 2014.

This exhibition marks a historic milestone: for the very first time, the project is presented as a dedicated solo exhibition, offering visitors an intimate look at Muholi’s vital visual archive of Black LGBTQIA+ lives, resilience, and joy.

The Soweto Uprising didn’t begin on June 16, 1976—it was the culmination of a deep, growing consciousness long before young people took to the streets. Before The Bell Rang deconstructs the classic school uniform to tell this story. Created by emerging designers under The Internship by David Tlale and photographed on site at Constitution Hill, the collection uses disrupted silhouettes and symbolic motifs—like barbed wire and displaced ties—to explore the tension between discipline, rebellion, and freedom.
